EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
ORGANISATION SUMMARY
YPAA is a national membership association representing and promoting professional arts
organisations and individual artists whose work focuses primarily on engaging children and young
people in the arts. As the national peak body representing the arts for children and young people,
YPAA provides a crucial link between members, the arts sector, the wider community and
government.
YPAA is a nonprofit organisation with eight Board members, and head-quartered in Brisbane. YPAA
has a national office supported by a Marketing & Communications Officer and part-time administrative
staff. The Executive Director works closely with the Chair and Board members to realise the vision of
YPAA “to champion the power of art in the lives of young people.”
YPAA is the Australian member organisation for ASSITEJ, which stands for: Association International
du Theatre pour l’Enfance et la Jeunesse, or the International Association of Theatre for Children and
Young People. ASSITEJ is for professional theatre companies, individuals and organisations working
in the field of theatre for children and young people. It was established in 1965 and since then has
maintained and extended its membership network across the world. ASSITEJ is a membership
based, non political organisation with a commitment to peace and the rights of children and young
people.
With over 400 members – individuals and organisations – throughout Australia, YPAA is a strategic
leader in the arts providing professional development, research & publications, networking nationally
and internationally and public advocacy for youth arts.
YPAA members range from regional youth theatres to community arts practitioners to the education
programs of major cultural organisations. A typical annual program includes professional
development and networking opportunities in addition to regular services such as the YPAA
newsletter and employment service. Working closely with the federal funding and policy body, the
Australia Council and with each of the state /territory arts ministries, YPAA is the voice for arts
activities for children and young people in Australia.
YPAA receives core funding from the Australia Council for the Arts.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Advocacy
- Develop and implement an advocacy program on the value of young people and the arts for a range of stakeholders
- Identify and actively pursue projects that will enhance the young people and the arts sector and
- provide skills development through access to national and international networks for members
- Inform and comment on government policy for young people and the arts
- Review, maintain and develop a contacts database for lobbying and advocacy in each state/territory
- Locate and/or commission conference papers and research findings for publication and distribution
- Represent and make presentations on behalf of YPAA nationally and internationally
- Network with related peak bodies and young people and the arts stakeholders
- Create networking opportunities for YPAA members
- Oversee the management of YPAA member requests and inquiries
2. Marketing and Membership Development
Develop, and oversee the implementation of, an annual strategic marketing plan that includes:
- Ativities to reach Membership targets
- Distribution of marketing materials to generate membership and increase YPAA’s national profile
- Market research and analysis
- Distribution of media releases, generate publicity for YPAA, and manage media communications for YPAA events and publications
- Presence in industry publications including Lowdown Magazine
- Website development
3. International networks
- Promote and profile Australia as a leading young people and the arts country and member of
- ASSITEJ, the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People
- Liaise with, and support, the ASSITEJ International representative and the YPAA International Committee
- ASSITEJ section of the YPAA website
- Facilitate networking of members and member companies working with international producers and presenters
4. Funding and Sponsorship
- Secure funding for YPAA projects from a range of sources
- Prepare and submit funding applications and acquittal reports
- Liaise regularly with funding bodies
- Seek, maintain and service philanthropy and sponsorship in collaboration with YPAA Chair
5. Board and Governance
- Support the YPAA National Board as executive officer
- Liaise regularly with YPAA Chair
- Fulfil the statutory and financial management requirements of the organisation as an
- Incorporated Association.
- Prepare and distribute reports for YPAA Board meetings
- Prepare and distribute annual report
7. General Administration
- Staff the YPAA office during business hours
- Manage staff including a fulltime Communications Officer and part-time administrative
- assistance.
- Manage administration and finance systems
- Maintain a secure information management system
- Maintain and update YPAA Office procedures manual
- Manage and maintain accurate financial accounts for YPAA according to operational guidelines
- and in partnership with the YPAA Treasurer
- Ensure the Auditor and YPAA Treasurer receive appropriate and accurate documentation to undertake a successful yearly audit of the YPAA finance
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1. Personal Attributes and Skills
- Highly motivated.
- Ability to be self-directed with strong time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong IT skills with demonstrated experience on Microsoft Office, Excel, database
- management programs and MYOB.
- Commitment to and interest in the arts and /or public policy
2. Knowledge and Experience
- Experience and/or interest in advocacy and lobbying
- Knowledge of the values and practice of young people and the arts in Australia.
- Experience in and understanding of the principles of working with a Board.
- xperience in securing and managing funding and sponsorship
- Experience in project and event management.
- Experience and understanding of budgeting, including financial management
Salary Range
$60,000 – $70,000 depending on experience
