Wild Fire – old ways, new voices

A performance of new work by students of NAISDA Dance College

Sydney’s CarriageWorks will become the setting of a dance spectacular when NAISDA, Australia’s National Indigenous Dance College, presents its latest production, Wildfire – old ways, new voices, a collection of contemporary and traditional dance from NAISDA’s top students.

Wildfire – old ways, new voices will offer an Indigenous melting pot of contemporary interpretations by inspiring choreographers including Graeme Watson, Jason Pitt, Deon Hastie along with Maori artist Charles Koroneho and Jasmine Gulash as Creative Director.

For over 30 years, NAISDA has been teaching Traditional and Contemporary Indigenous Dance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to help preserve and share traditional arts and culture. This must-see performance will provide an opportunity to experience the beauty and talent of some of the best Indigenous dancers in Australia.
The production will explore different subjects and movements with five key pieces from a range of choreographers that explore a number of issues, powers, possibilities and dance pieces that surround Indigenous Australians.

“Wildfire - old ways, new voices, is a moving and inspiring production from our students that will certainly appeal to those interested in culture, dance, music and art. We hope Sydneysiders will join us in supporting our students and experience this very special interpretation,” said Kim Walker, Executive Director of NAISDA Dance College.

“The performance will provide a unique opportunity to see traditional dancers from the cultural powerhouse community of Elcho Island performing their songlines with the developing artists from NAISDA, as well as pieces from leading contemporary choreographers,” he added.

Wildfire – old ways, new voices will open at Bay 17 at CarriageWorks on 25 November for Koori night and performances on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November. Bookings can be made through Ticketmaster or direct from the CarriageWorks website.
