SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS BONACHELA’S INTERNATIONAL HIT

The Land of Yes & The Land of No opens in Sydney 19 October

Rafael Bonachela has reworked his internationally acclaimed The Land of Yes & the Land of No for Sydney Dance Company’s upcoming season, which premieres at the Brisbane Festival in September before opening at Sydney Theatre on 19 October.

Hot on the heels of receiving the highest accolade at the 2011 Australian Dance Awards – Most Outstanding Achievement in Choreography (6 Breaths) – and announcing a three-year extension of his contract, with The Land of Yes & the Land of No Bonachela presents his deepest exploration yet into the human psyche, the power of imagination and the body’s ability to give physical shape to memory, experience and emotions. The Land of Yes and The Land of No is imaginatively wrought from the signs and symbols that rule our everyday lives and spark our hidden memories. It is an abstract, intensely emotive and highly physical work, accompanied by an expressive score from Rafael’s long-time collaborator, Ezio Bosso, and set against a rich wall of vibrant fluoro tubes fashioned by renowned Designer Alan MacDonald, best known for his work on feature films The Queen and The Edge of Love.

The celebrated original production toured extensively across the UK and Europe following its premiere in 2009. Of the new production premiering in Australia, Rafael Bonachela says, “The Land of Yes & the Land of No has been with me for several years and is a very personal presentation. European audiences responded well to the work and it is very exciting to have the chance to take all that is great about it and expand on that to fit a company of this size, and specifically for the exceptional dancers of Sydney Dance Company and Australian audiences.

“Additionally, having Amy Hollingsworth, who danced in the original and won the Critic’s Circle Award for Most Outstanding Female Performance for it, working with me on the new production is a rare opportunity for the dancers. It allows them to get to know the piece from a deeper perspective.”

Bonachela has gathered a creative team of some of the best in the business to bring the new production to life, including world-renowned composer and double bass virtuoso Ezio Bosso; Designer Alan MacDonald; UK designer Theo Clinkard who has costumed some of the world’s most significant opera and dance companies; and internationally-renowned Lighting Designer Guy Hoare. Ezio Bosso previously created scores for Bonachela’s We Unfold (2009); 6 Breaths (2010) and LANDforms (2011).
