When Sydney Dance Company’s New Creations opens at the Sydney Theatre on 23 March 2010, audiences can expect to discover something powerful and unique.
Firstly, Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s new work 6 Breaths, has been conceived in close collaboration with its composer Ezio Bosso, whose score of the same name is the work’s inspiration.
Next, to add an intriguing counterpoint to the presentation of these two world premieres at Sydney Theatre, Rafael has commissioned Adam Linder, the Berlin-based Australian choreographer to create and perform in his first dance work in Australia ARE WE THAT WE ARE. Both Rafael and Adam Linder are winners of London’s prestigious Place Prize for Choreography, noted for pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance expression, most recently awarded to Adam Linder in 2008.
Fashion innovators Josh Goot and Jordan Askill are designing costumes for 6 Breaths and ARE WE THAT WE ARE respectively, while award-winning Lighting Designer Nick Schlieper will undertake his first collaboration with Sydney Dance Company, lighting both productions.
For New Creations 1 of the 2010 season, Sydney Dance Company introduces 4 new dancers Charmene Yap, Natalie Allen, Alexander Whitely and Bernard Knauer, each of whom has recently joined the Company from careers both overseas and in Australia.
As Rafael Bonachela states, “I believe that artistic collaboration is a vital ingredient in my work. With New Creations we have provided every artist involved in the two productions with the chance to stretch their horizons and expand their potential simply by working together for the first time, enabling artistic risks and welcoming a fresh energy to the work. For my own impetus, firstly my collaboration with composer Ezio Bosso, the first of many, has resulted in a score that is both beautiful and moving. But also, to work for the first time with designer Josh Goot, has added an exciting and colourful dynamic.”
“My vision for Sydney Dance Company is to astound and to create unforgettable new works. I believe that this team will do just that.”
