An initiative supported by Stella Maris College, Pulse8 is a youth dance company resident on the Stella Maris campus. With a vision to support and nurture young dancers and dance makers, pulse8 creates a fertile arena where industry meets education. The company not only provides a platform for young aspiring artists but also produces new work on an annual basis, as well as offering a mentoring program for emerging choreographers.
Dancers have had the privilege of working with leading contemporary choreographers such as Anton, Narelle Benjamin, Fiona Malone, Bernadette Walong, Vicki Van Hout, Mike Van Loon and The Fondue Set. Led by Kay Armstrong, award winning Sydney independent performer/choreographer, the group is the only contemporary youth company of its kind in Sydney. Holding annual open auditions it draws from dancers aged16 – 25 from all over Sydney, with some dancers moving to Sydney to specifically audition for the group.
Currently, PULSE8 is working on their second season in 2008, due to be performed in early November, CURVE: the loveliest distance between two points. This season will feature works from Narelle Benjamin, Melanie Palomares, Sarah Vyne Vassallo and Artistic Director, Kay Armstrong.
It’s been a series of busy Tuesday nights for Stella Maris student Angela Geoghegan, 17, along with ex student Hannah Sherwood, 18. Both girls are part of Sydney’s premiere youth dance company, PULSE8, which currently has its home at Star of the Sea Theatre, Stella Maris.
“ I have lived in Manly and danced most of my life, I was excited to hear that Manly had the first Sydney youth dance company. The coming up performance will be my fourth with PULSE8”, says Hannah.
Likewise Angela was excited to hear about PULSE8 and went to watch their 2007 performances at Star of the Sea. She was naturally excited to be accepted into the company after auditioning in January this year.
“ After seeing the shows I was inspired! I really wanted to be in it, I thought everyone was so talented” Angela recalls.
As part of the season PULSE8 will be running a schools workshop, where students from years 9 to tertiary level can learn repertoire and register for 2009 auditions.
