DANCE EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS (DEAS) ROUNDTABLE
In partnership with Ausdance NSW and the Sydney Opera House, Ausdance National is holding the 2011 Roundtable for Dance Education in Australian Schools at the Sydney Opera House on 14-15 April 2011.
The DEAS Roundtable is being convened to include teachers and key state and territory delegates who are working with dance education syllabus, curriculum policy and practice. It will include curriculum leaders, officers, writers, inspectors, teachers and researchers working within the K-12 continuum.
The Roundtable aims to provide opportunities for:
• Delegates to become informed about the Australian Curriculum processes, possible resources and support materials for dance in schools;
• The planning of advocacy and lobbying strategies for governments to support dance in Australian schools.
The last DEAS Roundtable was held in 2005. Since then, there have been significant changes in the national education agenda, with the Arts included in Phase 2 of the new Australian Curriculum. With the arts curricula about to enter the writing stage, revisiting the Roundtable will provide an excellent opportunity to review achievements and work through some of the issues that have been raised in the writing of the Shape Paper and the implications for dance education in the new curriculum.
The Roundtable will be facilitated by David Spurgeon. Teachers are invited to attend the first day which, as well as roundtable discussions, will feature a number of presentations, with the Keynote Address by Robert Randall, General Manager, Curriculum. Other speakers include Jeff Meiners, dance writer for the Arts Shape Paper and Early Childhood Lecturer at the University of SA, Dr Katrina Rank, Education and Training Manager, Ausdance Victoria and Helen Cameron, Education Consultant, The Australian Ballet. Day two includes the meeting roundup, group discussion and identification of recommendations and actions for each state and territory, including federal and local actions.
The registration cost for the conference is $150, with registration for teachers attending Day One only at $70. Places are strictly limited. Click here for full details and to register

Mod Dance Company presents Graeme Murphy’s Suite Synergy
The beat goes on….
In April 2011, Sydney audiences will have the chance to witness the birth of a new era in Australian contemporary dance, when Mod Dance Company perform from 6 to 17 April at the Lyric Theatre, Star City, as part of Mod Dance Company’s first national tour.
Suite Synergy is a dynamic creation by Australian dance icon and Chief Patron of Mod Dance Company, Graeme Murphy and is inspired by two of his most popular and critically acclaimed productions from the 1990s, Synergy with Synergy and Free Radicals.
The first contemporary dance piece to be produced by Murphy in four years, Suite Synergy will feature eighteen exceptionally talented young dancers, accompanied by a pulsating percussion score performed live by four musicians.

FATHOM
Dean Walsh
In Residence at Performance Space: 12 – 31 July
In Fathom, Dean Walsh investigates the place of the human body and biology in the face of our environment’s uncertain future. Utilising a distinct movement style that is partly based on the physiology and behaviour of marine species and drawing on scientific research into marine habitats and climate change, Walsh explores questions of extinction, sustainability and bio-diversity.
Fathom showcases the influence of Walsh’s scuba-diving training and experience on his dance practice, as well as his explorations into human genetic memory, conservation movements and environmental change. Fathom is a solo performance ‘touchdown’ presented as part of Dean Walsh’s Australia Council Dance Fellowship.
For more information and to book go to: http://www.performancespace.com.au/?p=7169
Fathom will premiere at Performance Space between 19th and 21st May.

Sydney Theatre and Chunky Move present
CONNECTED
In their sell-out, international sensations Glow and Mortal Engine, Chunky Move transcended the limits of earthly form by immersing dancers in an illusory world of motion tracking and projection technology. In their newest work, Connected, this dynamic is flipped on its back and digital technology is side-stepped in favour of pure mechanics. Teaming up with Californian artist, Reuben Margolin, Chunky Move’s Gideon Obarzanek animates both the body and the machine through physical connection between the dancers and Margolin’s purpose-built, kinetic sculpture. Beginning with simple movements and hundreds of tiny pieces, the dancers build their performance while they construct the sculpture in real time.
