Now launching a brand new Rolfing® Practice in Newtown!!

To promote this new venture, I am offering all Ausdance members a discounted rate for a three session series or ten series of Rolfing®

Contact me at 0406 006 204 or by email at soundbodysomatics@gmail.com to schedule a session in Newtown or St Leonards. Both practices are close to the train station.

What is Rolfing?

Rolfing is a strategic and holistic system of manual therapy and movement education that works with restrictions in tissue and inhibitions in coordination to organize the body in gravity creating the potential for more functional movement patterns.

More information about Structural Integration and Fascia:

Connective tissue or fascia creates continuity throughout the body as it wraps every muscle, nerve and organ and makes up all tendon, ligament and bone. It is organized (or disorganized) in response to gravity, our habitual movement patterns, strain, emotional tension and trauma. With slow and gentile pressure that is applied both strategically and mindfully after a body reading, we can balance the tonus of the fascia thereby assisting the body to achieve greater ease in function, comfort and vitality.

Rolfing® is the popular name for Structural Integration bodywork. The basic series consists of ten sessions. In a series of sessions we are working not only with the connective tissue but also with rhythms of respiration and gait. We also educate the client in ways of using the new possibilities through perceptual movement education. Each Rolfing® session builds upon the results of the previous one, so that the results are cumulative. The first seven sessions remove strain from specific areas of the body: the lower back, neck, knees, etc. the remaining sessions organize and align the body as a whole, resulting in better balance, enhanced freedom of movement, and a higher energy level. It is also possible to do a one-off session or a series of three sessions and still get many benefits from the work.

Rolfing® can help with physical performance as it breaks up adhesions, improves range of motion and alignment. It is particularly useful for the overuse patterns of dancers. You can increase movement potential and energy when you are not doing so much battle with gravity in maintaining the verticality of your structure. Rolfing® also helps with stress and pain management. The process increases body awareness which can have a wonderful effect on how you relate to your environment both inside and out.

Angela Hill is a Certified Rolfer™, Rolf Movement Practitioner™, somatic therapist and movement educator.  She has a BFA in dance education and a background of fifteen years as a dancer, choreographer and teacher of movement to people of all ages and abilities. Angela has been practicing manual therapy for the last five years. She studied Rolfing® in Boulder, Colorado, Sydney, Australia and Barra do Sahy, Brazil with the top international Rolfing® faculty. She has trained in the Hakomi Method of Experiential Psychotherapy which supports the mind-body aspect of her work. Angela’s approach is also informed by her experience with other modalities such as Ideokinesis, Body-Mind-Centering, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Contact Improvisation, Shiatsu, Yoga and Energetic Healing.

Her philosophy is that our many layers of being - structural, functional, emotional and energetic can come into better resonance and alignment when we can be present in our bodies, integrating both past experiences with new possibilities.

Behind every tension is a belief.”
            Ron Kurtz, Founder
The Hakomi Method of Experiential Psychotherapy

The way you walk across a room is the way you walk through life.”

CALL FOR PAPERS

GENRE, MUSIC AND SOUND SERIES: VOLUME 6
MOVIES, MOVES AND MUSIC: The Sonic World of Dance Films
Edited by Dr Pauline Manley and Dr Mark Evans
Published by Equinox, London

About the Volume

Over the last 40 years, while the musical film has faded from its historical high-point to a more isolated and quirky phenomenon, the dance film has displayed refulgent growth and surprising resilience. A phenomena of modern movie-making, the dance film has spawned profitable global enterprises (Billy Elliot), has fashioned youthful angst as sociological voice (Saturday Night Fever, Footloose and Dirty Dancing) and acted as a marker of post-modern ironic camp (Strictly Ballroom). This modern genre has influenced cinema as a whole in the ways bodies are made dimensional, in the way rhythm and energy are communicated, and in the filmic capacity to create narrative worlds without words.
Emerging as a distinct (sub) genre in the 1970s, dance film has been crafting its own meta-narrative and aesthetic paradigms that, nonetheless, display extraordinary variety. Ranging from the experimental, ‘you are there’ sonic explorations of Robert Altman’s The Company and the brutal energy of David La Chappelle’s Rize to the lighter ‘backstage musical’ form displayed in Centre Stage and Save the Last Dance, this genre has garnered both commercial and artistic success.

Meanwhile, Bollywood has become a juggernaut, creating transportable memory for diasporic Indian communities across the world. This is an entire industry based on the ‘dance number’, where films are pitched around the choreography, where the actors are not expected to sing, but they must dance.

This series of essays will investigate the relationship between movement and sound as it is revealed, manipulated and crafted in the dance film genre. It will consider the role of all aspects of sound in the dance film, including the dancer generated sounds inherent in Tap, Flamenco, Irish Dance and Krumping. Drawing on significant post-War dance films from around world, this volume will finally address this mainstream genre, where image and sound meet in a crucial symbiosis.
Requirements:
Please send a 250 word abstract to the e-mail address listed below. Abstracts would be due by August 15 2010.  Final articles would be due mid January 2011.

This volume will focus on the feature dance film rather music video or musicals. We are especially interested in avant-garde, hip hop, Bollywood and commercial ‘backstage’ dance films, but articles which fall outside these categories are also encouraged.

Finalised articles should be between 6000-8000 words.

Please note that acceptance of the proposal does not guarantee publication and all chapters will be subject to normal processes of peer review. Please send proposals and further enquiries to Dr Pauline Manley: pauline.manley@mq.edu.au
