LA DANSE – A DOCUMENTARY OF THE PARIS OPERA BALLET

La Danse, a behind the scenes documentary of The Paris Opera Ballet - one of the world’s great ballet companies, opens on 21 October.

More about the film:
Over twelve weeks, master documentarian Frederick Wiseman filmed the dancers at the Paris Opera Ballet as they tirelessly rehearsed for the forthcoming season, which featured, amongst others, Rudolf Nureyev’s The Nutcracker Suite and Pina Bausch’s Orphée and Eurydice. Wiseman is known for his ability to disappear into walls (or in this case, mirrors) and La Danse is no exception.
The camera is absent, and we’re in the room with the dancers as they jeté and pirouette across the floor, listen to the choreographer, take a breath and start again. We also glimpse the bureaucracy behind the scenes, the empty corridors of the Palais Garnier, the seamstresses and the noisy cafeteria. Wiseman’s meticulous approach – as he explained at the recent International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, ‘I have to be able to tell myself why every shot is in the film’ – finds an ideal analogy in each dancer’s exquisite concentration on the perfect step.
