Dance Dialogues: conversations across cultures, artforms and practices
FIVE DAY INTERNATIONAL CHOREOLAB INTENSIVE: CALL FOR DANCERS
The World Dance Alliance Global Summit 2008 calls for applications from dancers interested in participating in a unique five-day international Choreolab intensive.
Two renowned choreographers will be mentors for this international choreographic laboratory:
- Boi Sakti, Artistic Director of Boi Sakti Dance Theatre
- Lloyd Newson, Artistic Director of DV8
Four mid-career choreographers will be chosen to work with the two mentors, one from Australia (the host country) and one each from the three regions of WDA (Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe). The four choreographers will be joined by 28 dancers to be selected from Australia and from the WDA regions.
The dancers will have diverse training and different cultural backgrounds. The choreographers will work intensively with seven dancers each, over the five days. The Choreolab will be housed in four dance studios with the final showing at The Loft theatre at Queensland University of Technology’s Creative Industries Precinct.
Whilst successful applicants will be provided with accommodation assistance (where required) and a modest living allowance for each working day of the Choreolab, dancers will be responsible for their own travel costs associated with attendance and participation in this event.
Applications from dancers should include:
- CV (200 words max) – should demonstrate high level professional performance experience
- Statement of the perceived benefits from engagement in the Choreolab
- 2 Letters of Support
- One head-shot in electronic format
- Dancers - DVD of class work including solo choreography if relevant (5 min max). Applicant to be clearly identified and clearly visible. (2 copies)
- Dancers from culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
- All support material (head-shot, support letters or video footage) to have been created no more than two months prior to the application deadline.

The Summit: The 2008 World Dance Alliance (WDA) Global Summit in partnership with Ausdance, is a five-day international event that brings together dancers, academics, teachers and choreographers from the Asia/Pacific region, Europe and The Americas. The Summit provides an opportunity for the global dance community to share, discuss and learn about current issues in dance.
When: 13 – 18 July 2008
Where: Brisbane

Program: The 2008 World Dance Alliance Global Summit program is built around the following four key issues facing culture and the arts in the 21st century:
- sustainability
- mind/body connections
- transcultural conversations
- re-thinking the way we make/teach dance
A four-tiered program will explore these key issues through the notion of dialogues:
- Dance dialogues featuring provocative key thinkers and artists who will initiate conversations on the Summit themes and feed into conference discussions.
- Conference/performative dialogues comprising a series of refereed academic and performative presentation events and forums.
- Physical dialogues comprising an intensive Choreolab and practical master class program
- Networking dialogues, the biennial Congress of WDA members from the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas.
