“Dance India Dance” – Australian Bollywood Choreographer Farah Shah is a judge on India’s highest rating reality dance show !!

When you think Bollywood, it is impossible not to think of Farah Shah. After-all, she was fundamental in bringing Bollywood to Australia; launching Australia’s first Bollywood classes at Mango Dance Studio in 2002, long before Australia had even the slightest hint of the forthcoming sensations of Jai Ho and Slum dog Millionaire. Since then Mango Dance Studio has become Sydney’s premier Bollywood dance studio, with Mango trained dancers performing everywhere from Uncle Ben and SONY India Commercials, The Today Show, Australian Idol to Bollywood movies filmed in Australia.

Farah Shah is well known as a multi-talented choreographer, dancer, performer, instructor and now judge. Shah has traded her So you think you can dance choreographer hat, to be a judge on India’s highest rating dance show Dance India Dance.

Shah has always seen the potential of Indian dance in Australia and gave up a 12 year career in IT to become a full time Bollywood Choreographer. Since then she has never looked back and has spent much of her time in the spotlight for her choreography and performance internationally. Shah was the official choreographer for the 2008 Australian MTV awards. Her breathe-taking opening number demonstrated a powerful fusion between Indian and contemporary dance cultures. Shah was also a choreographic consultant for Dancing with the Stars in India and has created and featured in numerous television commercials, including SONY India and Uncle Ben’s that aired in both India and the UK. Am I the only one wondering, where does Farah Shah find the time?

You know that you've made it when you are high in demand. Shah is constantly approached to choreograph movies, commercials, corporate shows and promotional events. It seems we have no choice, but to remember Farah Shah’s name.

Anything Shah touches turns to gold. The dancers of Bollywood Spice, Shah’s Sydney based dance troupe, have become local Bollywood superstars. They regularly undertake as many as 10 performances per month, including Bollywood corporate shows, Bollywood movies, commercials, weddings and parties. Shah supplied 12 professional dancers for the Bollywood movie Hey Baby as well as 300 extras for the Bollywood Hit Chak De. "I loved the fact that India outsourced to Australia this time," Shah explains, "It is very exciting".

Mango Dance Studios and Farah Shah alike have achieved enormous success. “It makes me very proud, after all the hard work I have put in launching Bollywood dance in Sydney and Australia”. Shah believes that the increased popularity of Bollywood in Australia and the world reflects a “growing trend in globalisation and a desire to find fun ways of keeping fit”.

Mango Dance Studio is located in Sydney’s iconic North Sydney, in a rustic renovated cinema. The studio offers “flavours of Bollywood dance”, with classes in Bollywood, Bollywood & Bhangra, Bollywood Semi-Classical, Bhangra Hip hop, Bollywood Kids and Classical Indian.
