The sense of open landscape and physical freedom projected onto the walls of the prisoners’ exercise yard bring a bitter irony to the site.
The Maine ocean projected on these prison walls recalls the Newcastle ocean achingly just beyond hearing. Within these walls, real life partners become fantasies, fleeting and unreal as time moves out of sync with an unreliable memory of how it was or should be.

This installation by Carol Dilley and Bill Matthews follows Dilley’s stay as artist in residence at the lock-up cultural centre, Newcastle.
