The Mozaic Dance Company presents IMAGO, a program of dance theatre and music that creates a timeless world of ritual, where archetypal forms emerge and effortlessly blur the boundaries between East/West & Contemporary/Traditional. The program is in three parts:
Imago Contemporary choreographies/compositions for frame drum, piano accordion and piano exploring the traditional essence of improvisation between dancer and musician.
Kim Sanders Nay player, multi-instrumentalist, composer & world music pioneer. A musical interlude from his repertoire of Turksih, Sufi and folk music.
Mizmar inspired by the Sa’idi music and dance of Upper Egypt. Choreography for 3 dancers featuring live percussion, traditional field recordings & contemporary sound design.
IMAGO is choreographed using Hilal Dance, a contemporary Egyptian Dance form developed by the internationally renowned Egyptian artist Suraya Hilal. The dance vocabulary draws its inspiration from the traditional dance cultures of Egypt and then extends these traditions in an expansive and contemporary way. Sydney based choreographer/dancer Sarah Hamilton has worked with the Europe based Hilal Dance Company, performing in Suraya Hilal’s recent program OSCILLATIONS in 2008 and presented her first full length program of Hilal Dance, MIZMAR, a work for four dancers and featuring live percussion and sound designs by Marianthe Loucataris, in 2007 at Sidetrack Theatre.
IMAGO brings to the fore the creative meeting point between dancer and musician. Dancer Sarah Hamilton and musician Marianthe Loucataris have developed a dynamic creative relationship inspired by their common interest and training in Egyptian dance and music with artists Suraya Hilal and Ibrahim el Minyawi. Sarah and Marianthe’s collaboration in IMAGO provides a glimpse of the beauty, intricacy and power of the Egyptian improvisational language and extends beyond this to incorporate contemporary compositions for piano and piano accordion.
Sarah Hamilton and Marianthe Loucataris are Australian artists developing multicultural dance theatre that is both innovative and authentic, respectfully transmitting the intricacy, power and beauty of valuable cultural traditions.
