Foot to Earth

Campbelltown Arts Centre in partnership with the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association Dance College (NAISDA), is presenting an Indigenous community dance development project Foot to Earth for Indigenous dance students from secondary schools in South- west Sydney. The project features a workshops program and a performance showing.

Foot to Earth: Workshops Program 28 July – 1 August

The workshops provide school students with the opportunity to learn and develop new skills and new forms of both traditional and contemporary Indigenous dance practice.  The school students will work with senior students from NAISDA, Australia’s most acclaimed tertiary Indigenous dance training institution, and acclaimed Indigenous theatre director Wayne Blair and Indigenous choreographer and dancer Tammi Tissell.

Foot to Earth: Performance Showing Friday 1 August 3pm, Free

The school students in collaboration with NAISDA students and staff, will perform for elders, families, community representatives and teachers to showcase the skills and dance work developed throughout the workshops program.

The performance showing will be based on the life stories of older Indigenous men from Campbelltown. The stories are taken from Campbelltown Arts Centre’s community cultural development project, My Father, My Brother – Stories of Campbelltown’s Aboriginal Men, which aims to promote learning, respect and understanding between generations.

Foot to Earth follows the successful 2005 inaugural partnership initiative between Campbelltown Arts Centre and NAISDA, and the equally successful 2007 project with NAISDA and acclaimed theatre director Wesley Enoch.  This 2008 project Foot to Earth continues the partnership between Campbelltown Arts Centre, NAISDA and Indigenous dance students from secondary schools in South-west Sydney.
