emptyspaces

On Monday 7 June the Minister for the Arts the Hon. Virginia Judge launched a new website – emptyspaces at FraserStudios. (http://emptyspaces.culturemap.org.au/)  It is designed to promote 'pop-up', short-term reuses of empty shops and other spaces for creative and community uses.

The website is part of Arts NSW’s work on Creative Enterprise Hubs or arts led renewal initiatives in town centres in NSW. Hubs operate in temporary low cost or free premises provided by commercial property owners, local governments and communities to artists and arts groups looking for space to produce, deliver and consume arts products and experiences. The rise of Creative Enterprise Hubs coincides with strong and growing interest in creative industries in many regions and has grown out of the success of the Renew Newcastle project.

emptyspaces is hosted by UTS Shopfront as part of the Cultural Asset Mapping in Regional Australia (CAMRA) project. The site will assist community leaders, entrepreneurs and creative thinkers to set up an 'empty space' initiative in their local community and encourages landlords and local governments to support local creative enterprises and community activities. It includes a Toolkit of information sheets and resources developed with the Arts Law Centre of Australia and the NSW Department of Planning, case studies of empty space initiatives in NSW, nationally and internationally, a community space for sharing information, maps of projects and spaces and the capacity for empty spaces to be logged.

If you know of empty space or are looking for space for a creative enterprise log on to http://emptyspaces.culturemap.org.au/ and generate new knowledge and information amongst the growing community of Hubs and empty space participants.

Arts NSW has also held a series of briefings on Creative Enterprise Hubs in Lismore, Parramatta, Lithgow, Port Kembla and Gosford to assist organisations investigating how to set up Creative Enterprise Hubs. Further briefings will be held in Wagga Wagga on 19 July and in Leichhardt and Wollongong.
