Australian and New York Dancers united through a lost art
Images of Dance: Australian & New York Dancers, at Steps Gallery, Carlton from 3-26 September 2010, offers a unique look at performance as seen through the eyes of an artist. Fresh from a successful show in New York earlier this year, Debra Luccio’s new work showcases images created through her collaboration with the New York based Rebecca Kelly Ballet and the Queensland Ballet.
It is not often an artist has the privilege to sit in on dance rehearsals. Quietly hidden in the corner, Luccio observes and draws the immensely talented dancers practising their craft. Her final creations reveal the figure in every stage of the creation of performance, allowing the viewer an unusually wide view of dancers’ immersive strain and commitment to the creation of beauty on stage.
Debra Luccio is one of Australia’s foremost printmakers, with her skill in monotypes recognised with a national printmaking award in 2009. Luccio’s work has led to a revival of this painterly printmaking form in Australia. Images of Dance will feature several monotypes as well as paintings.
“Debra Luccio’s work will stand the test of time. In one hundred years she will still be widely admired – if not more,” Stephen A Fredericks, President New York Society of Etchers, IMPRINT 2010
