ArtStart gives artists a $10,000 career kick-start
Building a career in the arts just got a little easier with the new round of applications for ArtStart grants open until 5 October 2010.
As part of the Australia Council for the Arts’ career building initiative, more than 100 grants of up to $10,000 each are available for artists who have graduated from an accredited artist training scheme within the last three years or are about to graduate.
“The Artist Careers research released last week by the Australia Council shows that creating a career as an artist is a difficult thing to do,” says Director of ArtStart, Kath Melbourne. “ArtStart is one way of addressing this. Rather than being a grant to directly invest in creating art, ArtStart is a grant for recently graduated artists to invest in themselves and in their career.”
Applicants can use the grants to, among other things, develop skills, rent studio space or tools, get expert business advice, expand their marketing and promotional skills or put together a portfolio.
Interested artists are encouraged to visit www.artstartgrant.com.au and follow the team on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to learn more about ArtStart, get tips about how to prepare the best possible application and view updates on the progress of previous ArtStart recipients.
How to apply
To apply for an ArtStart grant, applicants need to submit a written application outlining a simple five-year plan of activities they believe are important to establishing their practice. The ArtStart website guides candidates through the application process from start to finish.
