Ausdance Victoria is delighted to announce

The Australian Dance Awards

2008 SHORTLIST

Ausdance Victoria is delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2008 Australian Dance Awards - winners will be revealed at 7.30pm on Sunday 15 June 2008 at the Arts Centre, State Theatre.

The shortlist nominees for the 2008 Australian Dance Awards were announced today – with Lucy Guerin Inc topping the list with an impressive four nominations from the nine categories.

The Awards recognise excellence across all dance forms, identifying professionals both in Australia and overseas, who have distinguished themselves in performance, choreography, design, dance writing, teaching and the many other related professions inextricably woven into dance.

2008 marks the beginning of a new era and a new home for the gala Performance and Awards celebration, which sold out performances at the Sydney Opera House from 2004 to 2007. Melbourne will host the Awards from 2008 to 2010, during The Australian Ballet’s June season.  In a transitional arrangement, the 2008 Australian Dance Awards will recognise work presented between 1 July 2006 and 31 December 2007; the two subsequent ceremonies will recognize worked presented in the previous calendar years.

The panel of judges has short-listed four nominees in each category, with Victoria scooping three of the four places in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Choreography’ category including Lucy Guerin, Gideon Obarzanek and Stephen Baynes.

Hugh Jackman has received a nomination for his performance in The Boy From Oz along with Tony Sheldon for Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and both Silvia Entcheva and Tobias Cole for their performances in This Show Is About People, which was performed at both the Melbourne and Sydney Festivals.

Townsville-based Dancenorth has been short-listed twice – for both Outstanding Performance By A Female Dancer and Outstanding Performance By A Company.

Robina Beard, Selection Panel Chair says “The quality of works presented in Australia over this period was exceptional and the short-listed nominees reflect a great diversity across the country and a vibrant dance culture. We are really delighted that a number of the short-listed nominees – Ros Warby, Chunky Move, Dancenorth and The Australian Ballet - will all be performing at the awards.”

The 2008 Australian Dance Awards will also include the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be announced on Monday 2 June.

On Sunday 15 June, Awards will be presented in the following categories:
